Wikipedia Late Ordovician survivals and extinctions: There were no land animals and extinctions were confined to water life. There were two distinct extinctions roughly a million years apart. The first of these began about million years ago.
Together, these extinctions may have removed about 85 percent of species of marine animals. All of the major animal groups of the Ordovician oceans survived, including trilobites, brachiopods , corals, crinoids and graptolites, but each lost important members.

The lower boundary of the Cambrian was originally held to represent the first appearance of complex life, represented by trilobites. The recognition of small shelly fossils before the first trilobites, and Ediacara biota substantially earlier, led to calls for a more precisely defined base to the Cambrian period. Nevertheless, there are arguments that the dated horizon in Oman does not correspond to the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary, but represents a facies change from marine to evaporite-dominated strata — which would mean that dates from other, more suitable sections, ranging from or Ma, are more suitable.
The sea levels fluctuated somewhat, suggesting there were ‘ice ages’, associated with pulses of expansion and contraction of a south polar ice cap. However, average temperatures were 7 degrees Celsius higher than today. There were likely polar ice caps and a series of glaciations, as the planet was still recovering from an earlier Snowball Earth. It became warmer towards the end of the period; the glaciers receded and eventually disappeared, and sea levels rose dramatically. This trend would continue into the Ordovician period.

Beagle,’ as naturalist, I was much struck with certain facts in the distribution of the inhabitants of South America, and in the geological relations of the present to the past inhabitants of that continent. In considering the Origin of Species, it is quite conceivable that a naturalist, reflecting on the mutual affinities of organic beings, on their embryological relations, their geographical distribution, geological succession, and other such facts, might come to the conclusion that each species had not been independently created, but had descended, like varieties, from other species.

The Adirondack Mountains represent a south- western extension of the Grenville province via the Frontenac arch through the Thousand Islands sector of the St. The region is divided topographically into the Adirondack Highlands, underlain largely by granulite-facies orthogneisses, and Adirondack Lowlands, underlain by upper amphibolite— grade metasedimentary rocks, notably marbles.

The western hemisphere is dominated by the Tharsis region red and brown. Tall volcanoes appear white. Valles Marineris blue is the long gash-like feature to the right.
